Follow the Money
70% of all donations to Blue Sea Philanthropy's "Coldest Night of the Year" event are disbursed to participating charity partners in communities across Canada.
Approved charity partners raise money in the WALK by actively recruiting teams of walkers who register with Blue Sea Philanthropy (BSP) to participate and fundraise on their behalf. During registration, teams select the local charity they want to walk for, and that charity gets 70% of everything those teams raise. Although the vast majority of teams who support partners will be local, each partner is free to recruit teams to walk for them at any of our WALK locations across Canada.
Blue Sea Philanthropy operates the WALK and provides operational, marketing, financial, service, and location development for approved charity partners. In turn, approved charity partners host "Coldest Night of the Year" under agreement with Blue Sea Philanthropy, a Registered Canadian Charity (CRA tax number: 819882655RR0001)
Question: Where are your audited financial statements?
Blue Sea Philanthropy received their charitable status from CRA on May 31, 2012, so there are no statements to provide at this time. For the last two years, CNOY operated under the charitable oversight of International Teams Canada, a Christian NGO that helped launch the event in 2010.
Question: Isn't 30% a bit high for admin?
Our charitable "program costs" (for which we were approved as a charity), include both the cost of running and operating the event as well as the disbursements to partners. That's an important inclusion. Our uniquely BSP admin costs have not yet been audited but will likely come in somewhere near 5-7%.
Question: Where does the money actually go?
In short, the money always stays local. A respected and well-known local charity recruits teams and walkers to raise money on their behalf in each town that hosts the Coldest Night of the Year. They are the recipients of the money raised.
