The Coldest Night of the Year (or the WALK for short) is a non-competitive 5 and 10 km winter-walk fundraiser supporting select Canadian charities that serve the hungry, homeless and hurting in cities and communities across Canada.
The WALK is held on Saturday, February 25th and provides walkers the opportunity to experience a hint of the challenges faced by the homeless by walking for a few hours during a cold Canadian night in the dead of winter.
2011
In 2011, the WALK was piloted in Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo. From a standing start in mid-January until WALK Day 40 days later, a passionate group of 406 walkers (including kids, youth, families and retirees) signed up and together raised a remarkable $110,000 for the hungry, homeless and hurting in their cities (and leaving behind the original goal of $40,000 in the dust). Proceeds of the 2011 WALK were disbursed to Ray of Hope, Yonge Street Mission and Sanctuary Ministries.
2012
In 2012, the WALK is expanding to as many as 15 additional cities across Canada with a goal of raising $300,000 by February 25th with the help of an estimated 2500 walkers and volunteers.
