The Coldest Night of the Year is a non-competitive 5- and 10-km winter-walk fundraiser supporting select Canadian charities that serve the hungry, homeless and hurting in cities and communities across Canada.
Held on Saturday, February 23rd, 2013, the walk provides participants the opportunity to experience a hint of the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness by walking for a few hours during a cold Canadian night in the dead of winter.
In 2011, the WALK was piloted in Toronto and Kitchener/Waterloo by Blue Sea Philanthropy. From a standing start in mid-January until WALK Day 40 days later, a passionate group of 406 walkers (including kids, youth, families, and retirees) signed up and together raised a remarkable $110,000. 70% of that amount was disbursed to our exceptional location partners - Ray of Hope, Yonge Street Mission and Sanctuary Ministries.
In 2012, the WALK expanded to 18 cities across Canada and raised $668,000 with the help of 3075 walkers (not to mention a whole host of volunteers, sponsors and donors.)
In 2013, the Coldest Night of the Year is aiming to double our locations (and total number of walkers) with a goal of raising more than $1,000,000.
